On This Day: January 13, 1955

On this day in 1955 these overhead photos were taken of the Disneyland construction site. Incredibly, the park would open just over seven months later!

While much work remains, the unearthing of the Rivers of America is well underway and Anaheim’s first jungle is taking shape. You can also see the Opera House, which is today home to Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, but at that time served as the wood mill. The two structures in the center are the Fantasyland dark rides.

In addition to the significant work that remains before the park’s opening, what really stands out is the surrounding landscape in 1955. It’s no surprise that when Walt took his friend Art Linkletter out to the Anaheim property shortly after it was acquired, Mr. Linkletter expressed some concerns.
